Gabriel, Judge of Hell, or simply Gabriel, is a Supreme Angel and the main antagonist of ULTRAKILL. He is initially very callous and condescending in his manner of speaking towards V1 and plays a significant role in the story and lore of the game's events. V1 first encounters Gabriel as the boss of 3-2: IN THE FLESH, and is the final boss of the Gluttony layer and Act I, where, after delivering a monologue to V1 before it enters the arena, suddenly appears from a beam of light and initiates a fierce duel.
Appearance
Gabriel is the first Angel that V1 encounters, and his armor is predominantly bright silver with a black bodysuit underneath, adorned with various gold accents. He wears golden pauldrons, gauntlets, and leg greaves that cover his arms and legs, as well as a helmet adorned with a gold cross and three ventholes on either side of his face. His breastplate has a circular angelic design embossed onto it, with six tassels hanging underneath. He also wears a teal loincloth, a black skirt, and metal faulds held by a golden buckle. Additionally, a small halo and two long wings formed from cyan light adorn his back. Two long swords with rectangular, black scabbards adorned with the phrases "Splendor is Justice" and "Justice is Splendor" are also strapped to his right hip, but they are not used during his first encounter with V1.
Behaviour
Gabriel is extremely agile, attacking V1 with a variety of weapons made from pure light. Gabriel will also occasionally stop attacking to throw taunts at V1, those being the following:
You defy the light
A mere object
There can be only light
Foolishness, machine. Foolishness.
An imperfection to be cleansed
Not. Even. Mortal.
You are less than nothing
You're an error to be corrected
The light is perfection
You are outclassed
Your crime is existence
You make even the devil cry
After 50% of his health is depleted, Gabriel will be launched into the air and stunned before going into freefall. While freefalling, damage dealt to him will bounce him further upwards. In this state, upon contact with the ground or taking enough damage, Gabriel will enter his second phase, making his attacks much more complex and also becoming enraged.
Attacks
Gabriel has four attacks, with an extra attack in his second phase on Violent and above. Between each taunt, Gabriel will string two combo attacks together (three combo attacks on Violent and above), with a chance to perform an axe throw before each combo. He will not use the same combo attack twice in a row, and a maximum of one axe throw can be performed between taunts.
Spear Combo
Gabriel will materialize a tall spear of constructed light in his right hand, then teleport above the player. He will track the player for a brief period before lunging directly downward, dealing 25 damage on a successful hit. Gabriel will then teleport away and throw the spear at the player, dealing 35 damage. On Brutal difficulty and above, Gabriel may randomly teleport to the player's side and perform a lateral spear lunge in place of a vertical spear dive, requiring more attention to avoid damage. He may also perform this horizontal lunge at lower difficulties if he is prevented from teleporting above the player by a ceiling. The spear dive is unparriable but will not damage a sliding player, while the thrown spear can be parried back or deflected with a well-timed explosion.
In his second phase, Gabriel will try to lunge at the player twice before throwing the spear.
Katana Combo
Gabriel will materialize a katana of constructed light in his left hand and quickly slash twice for 15 damage each, followed by a thrust that propels him forward for 25 damage. He will only initiate this combo while the player is in close range, and it cannot be parried.
On his second phase, Gabriel will teleport before the final thrust.
Greatsword Combo
Gabriel will materialize a greatsword of constructed light in his right hand and dash at the player, swinging twice with the sword and then throwing it at the player as a spinning projectile. Both the swings and the projectile deal 35 damage. The swings must be avoided, but the thrown greatsword can be parried back to Gabriel.
In his second phase, Gabriel will teleport before throwing the greatsword, and if the sword flies for a certain amount of time without hitting the player or terrain, he will teleport to the sword to catch and throw it again. Greatsword projectiles that have been parried by the player are still eligible for the rethrow, allowing Gabriel to capitalize on parries that miss their mark.
Twin Axe Throw
Gabriel will materialize two axes of constructed light in both hands and quickly throw them at the player. The projectiles deal 30 damage and have minor tracking, allowing them to curve slightly to hit the player and potentially prolong their flight. These can be parried, as the two axes count as one big projectile.
Spiral Swords
Gabriel will be briefly enveloped in a ball of light, then materialize a set of eight swords of constructed light that orbit around him in a circle, acting as a shield. The individual swords are destroyed upon contact with the terrain or the player and expire on their own approximately 5 seconds after they are summoned. They deal 35 damage and cannot be parried out of their orbits. On Brutal difficulty and above, Gabriel will teleport the swords in a circle around the player after a short period of time, then they will pause briefly before flying toward the center. The swords can only be parried once they have stopped tracking and are preparing to launch, indicated by a yellow flash on each projectile.
Gabriel performs this attack upon transitioning to his second phase on Violent difficulty and above and upon every second taunt thereafter.
Strategy
Gabriel is an extremely agile boss and dodging his attacks is not an easy task.
The
Nailgun is an extremely effective weapon due to the fact Gabriel takes more damage from nails. Placing a Magnet on Gabriel and unloading both Nailguns onto him can wipe out up to 50% of his total health. More experienced players can also use
Overheat Storage for practically infinite burst nails for as long as the player can keep to combo up.
The
Electric Railcannon is also a good damage-dealer to Gabriel, especially when combined with coins. Players can attempt to line up a Railcoin on Gabriel for a huge amount of damage.
The
Alternate Piercer and the
Sharpshooter are also excellent against Gabriel due to their high damage potential, although aiming at Gabriel can be hard for the inexperienced.
Projectile Boosts are a consistent way to deal damage as a missed shot's explosion can still damage Gabriel. Combining them with the
Rocket Launcher's rockets is an extremely effective technique.
Healing off of Gabriel is difficult when he's attacking, however, his taunts are an excellent window of opportunity for healing, and by using
Shotgun Swapping and
Knuckleblaster punches at point-blank range. Parrying his projectiles with the
Feedbacker, although difficult, can consistently provide the player with a full heal and stamina recharge, and can also deal a small amount of damage to Gabriel.
Dodging Gabriel is a hard task; Sliding and conserving Stamina is the recommended approach. Dashing through the Divine Spear attack's lunges guarantees that the player will come out unharmed, and dashing through the Greatsword and Spinning Blade combos is also highly effective, however it will consume a large amount of stamina. Sliding away from his attacks, although harder to do for newer players, conserves Stamina and is equally as effective as dashing.
Patience is key while fighting Gabriel -- he will quickly cut down overly aggressive players. Waiting for openings to attack and watching out for parriable attacks is the most effective strategy to defeat him.
After depleting 50% of his health, Gabriel will be launched into the air and stunned temporarily. Use this moment to dish out as much damage for free as possible.

TYPE: Supreme Angel
DATA:
One of the most respected and feared archangels, Gabriel earned his reputation through power and efficiency.
Regardless of the task given, Gabriel would always perform it quickly and decisively, earning him the title of Judge of Hell after dethroning Minos and ending the Lust renaissance.
Despite answering to the Council, he is far more popular and beloved among angels due to his radiant personality and active nature, especially compared to the Council that strictly follows and upholds the dogma of the Faith.
STRATEGY:
- Gabriel's movements are fast and his attacks are deadly, but by observing which weapon he manifests, his attacks can be accurately predicted before he even starts them.
- Gabriel's pride stops him from attacking while taunting his opponent, opening up a short window for healing..

Gabriel, Apostate of Hate is the second encounter V1 has with Gabriel, and is the boss of 6-2: AESTHETICS OF HATE, and is the final boss of the Heresy layer and Act II. When entering the boss arena he is in, he can be seen playing the organ. Approaching Gabriel will cause him to stop playing and start a hateful speech directed towards V1. Angered and humiliated by his previous defeat, Gabriel swiftly unsheathes his two swords, and the fight begins with Gabriel enraged by default.
Appearance
Gabriel's new appearance while enraged drastically affects his color scheme. His armor is now a bright crimson, although most of the golden accents remain. His wings and halo have also turned a bright, blazing orange, and he is now constantly bathed in a circular red glow. Gabriel now also wields his two swords, Justice and Splendor, with the former bearing a blue blade with a gold hilt while the latter has a golden blade with a blue hilt.
During his second phase, Gabriel loses his enraged state and returns to his normal appearance. However, his wings and halo become a vibrant combination of blue and orange, reflecting his newfound passion and enjoyment of his battle against V1.
Behaviour
Gabriel is extremely agile, attacking the player with his twin swords Justice and Splendor.
During the fight, Gabriel will occasionally stop attacking to taunt the player by saying any of the following quotes:
IS THIS WHAT I LOST TO!?
YOU'RE GETTING RUSTY, MACHINE!
LET'S SETTLE THIS!
NOTHING BUT SCRAP!
I'LL SHOW YOU DIVINE JUSTICE!
TIME TO RIGHT MY WRONG!
YOU NEED. MORE. POWER!
After 50% of his health is depleted, Gabriel will be launched into the air and stunned before going into freefall. Use this moment to dish out as much damage for free as possible. While freefalling, damage dealt to him will be halved and bounce him further upwards. In this state, upon contact with the ground or taking enough damage, Gabriel will enter his second phase, losing the enraged status effect and having his attacks be empowered.
During this phase, Gabriel will use different taunts than the ones used in his first phase, them being:
I've never had a fight like this before!
Show me what you were made for!
Now THIS is a fight worthy of God's Will!
What is this FEELING?
Come get some BLOOD!
Come on, machine! Fight me like an ANIMAL!
I'll show you TRUE splendor!
Attacks
Gabriel has four attacks, with an extra attack in his second phase on Violent. Between each taunt, Gabriel will string two combo attacks together (three combo attacks on Violent), with a chance to perform a raw sword throw before each combo. He will not use the same combo attack twice in a row (unless locked out of both of his close-range combos), and unlike his previous fight, he has no limit on how many raw sword throws he can perform between taunts. In his first phase, Gabriel will teleport his swords back into his hands if they are mid-flight when he initiates an attack. In his second phase, he will instead manifest light construct copies of his swords to continue attacking without canceling his projectile, though in this state he will not teleport mid-combo except when initiating another sword throw.
Light Combo
Gabriel will reverse his grip on his swords, then dash directly towards the player, slashing twice with Justice, then once with Splendor, then kicking with his left foot, following up with a final lunging thrust with both swords. The first four hits deal 20 damage each and the lunge deals 35 damage. Only the finisher is parriable, though the disjointed thrust can outrange the Feedbacker if the player does not move into their parry.
In his second phase, he will teleport before the finisher unless his real swords are mid-flight.
Medium Combo
Gabriel will raise Splendor in his right hand and swing it twice, then follow up with a thrust from Justice and a final dashing, spinning slice with both swords. The first two hits deal 30 damage, while the last two hits deal 35 damage. He will only initiate this combo while the player is in close range, and only the finisher is parriable.
In his second phase, he will teleport before the finisher unless his real swords are mid-flight.
Heavy Combo
Gabriel will rear both his swords behind his left shoulder and cleave diagonally, then cleave again from his opposite shoulder, then quickly combine and throw them, with less windup than his raw sword throw. The first hit deals 35 damage, the second hit deals 45 damage, and the projectile deals 35 damage. He will only initiate this combo while the player is in close range, and both swings as well as the thrown swords can be parried.
In his second phase, he will teleport before throwing his swords, and on Violent difficulty, he will also teleport before the second swing unless his real swords are mid-flight.
Sword Throw
Gabriel will combine his swords horizontally in front of him, raise them over his head, and throw them at the player as a single spinning projectile, dealing 35 damage and exploding on contact with the terrain or the player. The swords have minor target tracking and can be parried. Unlike his axe throw, which expires after a certain amount of flight time, the sword projectile will last until it hits something or Gabriel teleports them back into his hands.
In his second phase, he will teleport right before throwing his swords.
Spiral Swords
Gabriel will materialize a set of eight swords of constructed light that orbit around him in a circle, acting as a shield. The individual swords are destroyed upon contact with the terrain or the player and expire on their own approximately 5 seconds after they are summoned. They deal 35 damage and can be parried out of their orbits, often directly into Gabriel.
Gabriel performs this attack upon transitioning to his second phase on Violent difficulty and upon every second taunt thereafter.
Strategy
Gabriel is an extremely agile boss and dodging his attacks is not an easy task.
The
Nailgun is an extremely effective weapon due to the fact Gabriel takes more damage from nails. Placing a Magnet on Gabriel and unloading both Nailguns onto him can wipe out a big chunk of his total health.
Healing off of Gabriel is difficult when he is attacking, however, his taunts are an excellent window of opportunity for healing, and by using
Shotgun Swapping and
Knuckleblaster punches at point-blank range. Parrying his attacks with the
Feedbacker or the Shotgun, although difficult, can consistently provide the player with a full heal and stamina recharge, and can also deal a huge amount of damage to Gabriel.
Dodging Gabriel is a hard task; Sliding and conserving Stamina is the recommended approach. Dashing through his combos guarantees that the player will come out unharmed, however it will consume a huge amount of stamina. Sliding away from his attacks, although harder to do for newer players, conserves Stamina and is equally as effective as dashing and conserves stamina. Parrying his attacks with the Feedbacker guarantees both a full heal and a stamina recharge, as long as the player dashes after parrying Gabriel's melee attacks.
Gabriel is even more aggressive in this battle, and consequently, charging in will get aggressive players killed very quickly. Dashing out of the way of his sword combos and then parrying their last hit is an effective way to stay in the fight while not getting caught on his blades.
After depleting 50% of his health, Gabriel will be launched into the air and stunned temporarily. Use this moment to dish out as much damage for free as possible. Note that all damage dealt during this period is halved.

DATA:
Having twice clashed with the machine and lost, Gabriel realized he had been mistaken. The strong fire that burned inside him was not hatred at all, but passion.
Gabriel had never before known the joy of a struggle, of coming face-to-face with an opponent of equal or greater measure. Though he had lost twice, each loss only further grew his desire to overcome.
Up until now, he had only done what was expected of him, but now for the first time he had found something he himself wanted. Not even the fast encroaching End of Hell mattered to him anymore.
Still, having come to realize the horrors he had committed in God's name, he felt a great guilt. Though he could not undo what he had done, Gabriel knew he had to make things right, and headed to Hell for the last time.
STRATEGY:
- While Gabriel's speed has increased, his accuracy has not. Dodging diagonally or to the side will prove more fruitful than trying to run backwards out of the range of his swords.
- Though his sword throw may seem impossible to dodge, it will prove an excellent weapon if parried instead.
- Overcome with emotion, Gabriel will sometimes stop to taunt his opponent, creating a window for healing..

In 5-3: SHIP OF FOOLS, a large hologram of Gabriel can be found in one of the ship's rooms. It is a recording of his words directed to a
Ferryman. He says the following:
Be not afraid, sinner.
Your devotion to God shows goodness in you
Plentiful indeed.
The heart is willing, but the body must rest
lest you squander one of the Lord's creations.
In 6-1: CRY FOR THE WEEPER, while walking towards the last room, Gabriel can be heard speaking directly to V1:
Machine,
I know you're here.
I can smell the insolent stench of your bloodstained hands.
I await you down below.
When the player enters the room, Gabriel says:

A mural of Gabriel seen in
Limbo.
Gabriel is heavily involved in Hell's affairs, even before inheriting the title of the Judge of Hell. His actions in the past of Hell heavily changed the course of its citizens that still persist to this day.
Previously God's preferred messenger, turned to a warrior of Heaven, then the Judge of Hell to a vengeful and emotional fighter, Gabriel is perhaps the most important character in the game to the point where he is the main protagonist, narratively speaking.
Backstory
It is unknown if Gabriel in ULTRAKILL is the same Gabriel in actual religious canon; such appearances are in the Hebrew Bible, the Quran, and the New Testament. If so, this Gabriel is responsible for announcing God's will to humans. In the New Testament, he tells the Virgin Mary she will give birth to Jesus. In the Hebrew Bible, he explains visions to the prophet Daniel, is the guardian angel of Israel, and carries out God's answers to prayers. In the Quran, he mainly transmitted the scriptures of God to prophets and messengers. He assisted Muhammad in battling a number of adversaries and is said to have leveled the city of Sodom with the tip of his wing.
In ULTRAKILL, he is described as the most loyal, proactive, and diligent of the angels, while also being a socialite and an efficient leader. When God disappeared, he was with the rest of the angels in Heaven to decide on how to proceed in His absence. When the Holy Council was established, he began answering to them, and they ordered him to assess Hell and retake it from other forces.
Under orders by the Council, he was dispatched to deal with King Minos and his revolutionized City of Lust. Minos attempted to reason with Gabriel, but Gabriel killed him without listening. A citizen who witnessed this moment wrote it into a book, which can be read in 2-2: DEATH AT 20,000 VOLTS:
TEXT SCANNED - LEGIBLE SCRIPT:
"...Gabriel struck down Minos, his flesh torn asunder with torrents
of crimson pooling at his feet as we all cried out for clarity.
'Justice,' Gabriel decreed to all, with our just ruler writhing in
wailing agony, 'The Lord's Will be done.' We watched on in horror as
Minos lay broken, now waning, screaming in defiance of God's Will,
Gabriel."
REMAINING TEXT: IRRELEVANT.
As Gabriel killed the Judge of Hell, he inherited the title, which he acted upon after he later restored order in all of Hell and Heaven. Minos' pet snakes turned into parasites, which reanimated the corpse into causing destruction to the city under its gargantuan size.
When Gabriel entered Greed, he was met with the army of King Sisyphus and his loyal insurrectionists, trained to usurp authority by force. The battle was reportedly of biblical proportions, causing much trouble for the angels, however, they were still slowly winning due to their superior tactics and experience. The insurrection ended when Gabriel noticed the enemy relied on their leader to a fault. After a focused attack on the King, Gabriel beheaded him with his two swords, Justice and Splendor, which had not been unsheathed for a very long time.
The husks that submitted to authority again were cleaved into pieces so they could continue their previous punishment, yet also not be able to rebel once again. The soul of Sisyphus was immediately put into the Flesh Panopticon as it had started to form into a Prime Soul just after death. Unruly insurrectionists were intended to be placed alongside him, under the watchful eyes of the Panopticon, but Sisyphus already in the middle of ascending prevented this, as that process could be completed if he was awakened, severely endangering Heaven.
When Gabriel reached Wrath, he was met with the Leviathan, a demon/husk hybrid, where the sullen were fused by Hell Mass into a serpentine shape. The souls of these morose sinners attempted to escape by the head of the Leviathan, but Gabriel pinned it back on its head with his spears, where it remains screaming amongst a heartbeat.
Gabriel went through the other layers of Hell to restore Heaven's rule. At this time, it is unknown what he did in the layers of Violence and below.
In-game
Within the events of the game, Gabriel is first seen in a painting in 1-4: CLAIR DE LUNE holding his signature spear. He is next seen in the room just right of it, where a book written by an unnamed husk asks Gabriel for forgiveness and asks to enter Heaven with him:
TEXT SCANNED - UNIQUE PASSAGE:
". . . My mind is adrift with the eternal torments. Lurid vistas painted in insidious tones, hollow walls that scream to the touch. A mocking song plays at all hours, even the sounds of birds are fake. All reminders of my enduring damnation.
Gabriel my dearest friend, in endless penance I have awaited your embrace into Heaven. I have been so faithful, accepting of my fate, but to what end? What punishment is this, that I am to bare the keys to my own doom with no hope of salvation. . . These skulls sneer their devilish grins, voices chattering, tempting me to take the plunge deeper into Hell. . . I won't do it.
I've hidden them away amongst the furnishings, books, and the very foundations of this accursed place. Forgive me Gabriel, I will await your..."
REMAINING TEXT: IRRELEVANT.
The next time the player sees Gabriel is in another book in 2-2: DEATH AT 20,000 VOLTS, detailing Gabriel mercilessly killing King Minos as he tries to reason with the archangel about the City of Lust.
Gabriel is then heard speaking directly to V1, telling it to turn away as it doesn't belong in Hell. As V1 remains silent and continues down, he battles with the machine. Even after Gabriel becomes tired of messing around, the machine still wins against the archangel. He retreats to Heaven after an emotional outburst.
Within Heaven, he meets with the Council to report on his battle. As the Council doesn't believe a machine can beat an angel under any circumstance, they assume Gabriel allowed it to win. His arguments were not heard. He was severed from the Holy Light as punishment, with 24 hours to spare; during that time, he was tasked with killing the machine that beat him.
The player once again hears mention of Gabriel in 4-2: GOD DAMN THE SUN, in a tablet detailing the lack of the angels' oppression and King Sisyphus building an insurrection, and leaving off in a transition to, presumably, its failure by the hands of the angels, who were led by Gabriel. He was then mentioned in the Terminal entry of the
Sisyphean Insurrectionist, being responsible for the mutilated body of the Insurrectionist and others.
TEXT SCANNED - UNIQUE PASSAGE:
"It has been days since we last saw any angels. Without their oppression, there is no need for us to carry on our punishment. Even the meekest of the damned have abandoned their penance to take up arms. All can see how they have robbed us of our minds, bodies, and souls, leaving us only the hopes of a salvation that will never come, but no longer.
King Sisyphus has acted in secret until now, amassing an army whose strength and numbers swell, but now there is no need to hide anymore. We have lived in the shadow of Heaven long enough to forget the taste of fear. Now the Sisyphean Insurrectionists prepare for war.
I have heard of Minos beginning a peaceful revolution, but our King Sisyphus knows such pacificity will gain no favor from our cruel captors. He knows that one can only fight power with power, and he shall lead us to freedom.
If only we knew the suffering that would befall us next . . ."
REMAINING TEXT: IRRELEVANT.
Gabriel is featured on a sandstone mural in the chambers of 4-3: A SHOT IN THE DARK, the mural covered in blood writing that reads "TRAITOR". Murals of the same variety can be found later in 4-4: CLAIR DE SOLEIL in Sisyphus' tomb, however not possessing the same blood writing.
He is again mentioned in another book in 5-2: WAVES OF THE STARLESS SEA, written by a Ferryman; when they fell overboard into the Ocean Styx due to a tsunami of new sinners, Gabriel saved them and brought them back to their boat, earning the sincere and genuine praise from the loyal husk. Various statues of Gabriel, carved by the Ferryman in reverence, are found throughout the level as well. In the Ferryman's boat shown in 5-3: SHIP OF FOOLS, a large painting depicting Gabriel saving the Ferryman is seen in the opening room, as well as a hologram of Gabriel, repeating the words Gabriel said to the ferryman as he saved them.
Be Not Afraid, sinner
Your devotion to God shows goodness in you
Plentiful indeed
The heart is willing but the body must rest
Lest you squander one of the Lord's creations.
Full transcript as heard in-game.
When fighting the Leviathan in 5-4: LEVIATHAN, Gabriel's spears are still embedded in the writhing mass of the sullen on top of it.
Within the City of Dis, V1 approaches Gabriel's location in 6-1: CRY FOR THE WEEPER, with him speaking directly to it, acknowledging its presence and that he's waiting for it. V1 reaches Gabriel in 6-2: AESTHETICS OF HATE. On the way there, he says that the machines have killed all life in Limbo and Lust, with Gluttony slowly dying off, declaring that machines know nothing but hunger, and aren't sated, even after purging all life on the upper layers; he once again remarks his hatred of the machine, and after another rage-filled monologue, the two fight once again. As the fight goes on, he moves from pure hatred to pure ecstasy, but he is defeated all the same. Gabriel comments on him only ever knowing the taste of victory, and the relief two defeats at the hands of the machine have given him. Gabriel retreats once more to Heaven, leaving to think about what has just happened.
Before reaching Heaven, he introspects on the circumstances he is in around a campfire on the lush Moon. This leads to him coming to terms with the atrocities he committed in the name of an absent God, whose disappearance means he has nothing left to live for than to follow his own path. He also deduces that those that currently sit in the Father's seat have twisted the memories of his words and warped his kingdom through their false rule, with the aimless masses following out of fear and desperation. Deciding to take justice into his own hands through a final encore, he enters Paradise and slaughters the Holy Council. The last councilor alive begs Gabriel to spare his life, commenting that he has mere hours to live. Gabriel, aware of this, decapitates the Councillor swiftly and gracefully. Gabriel, exiting into the gates of the auditorium, shows the head to the entirety of Heaven, sending an unspoken message to the denizens of Heaven, ringing across the cosmos: they were free. Gabriel soon left Heaven for the final time, heading to Hell for one last crusade.
It is presumed that he awaits V1 in Treachery.
