3-2: IN THE FLESH is the final level of Gluttony and Act I, starring the first encounter with Gabriel, Judge of Hell, the main antagonist of ULTRAKILL.
The music used in the level starts with a rendition of Bach: BWV 639 "I call to you, Lord Jesus Christ", and Divine Intervention for Gabriel's boss music.
Level
Start
3-2 starts with a tall chamber of pulsating flesh; leading up to a door above through a pathway upwards, broken up by various platforms and obstacles.
Following afterwards is a large, open chasm connected by a thin bridge of flesh. Upon the player reaching the walkway, a voice suddenly manifests itself to the player:
Disobeying the warning, the player ventures forward to a long tunnel of acid, with various moving bone platforms within the corrosive pool, requiring the player to platform across without falling into the acid, which deals 10 damage to the player while submerged.
Making it to the end of the room will lead to a drop into the chasm below, abridged with a walkway made of stone hands. The voice from earlier appears again:
Boss Encounter
After crawling through a narrow passage, the player enters the hallway to the boss arena, with a Terminal to the right of the entrance. The main arena consists of a single, octagonal platform with a large eye in the center, situated in an endless black pit alongside a massive beating heart.
Entering into the arena will suddenly cause a large pillar of light to summon into the arena, revealing Gabriel, Judge of Hell.
Gabriel is an extremely agile foe, attacking with various slashes, combos, and projectiles from his constructs of holy light. Each attack pattern has a distinct tell before Gabriel attacks, giving the player a moment to read what move he will perform and react accordingly.
Gabriel will also often stop to taunt the player in between his attacks, giving a window of healing for the player:
Once Gabriel's first health bar is depleted, Gabriel will shout in pain and be stunned as he falls to the ground, where the player can get some damage in and keep him in the air.
Once Gabriel lands on the ground or takes enough damage, Gabriel will Enrage, adding in teleports into his previous move-set and summoning a ring of swords on Violence difficulty.
End
After Gabriel is defeated, he will teleport to the center of the arena, kneeling on the ground, dazed at how the machine managed to defeat him:
Storming in a fit of rage, Gabriel teleports out of the arena, causing the central eye to break apart to reveal the exit shaft. Gabriel then says:
Intermission I
After exiting the level, the player's screen will fade to black, showing the series of events happening after Gabriel was defeated by the machine, now being judged at the feet of The Council for his treachery:
Disgrace. Humiliation. Unseemly and unwelcome at the feet of The Council. Their eyes ablaze with bitter resentment, glaring through Gabriel's wounds of body and soul, bore outward for all to see.
"Has this one abandoned the way of our creator?" "It is unworthy of its Holy Light" "The Father's Light is indomitable." "This one sees fit to squander it."
Their words resonated in Gabriel's limbs, coursing through as lightning upon wire, a searing hiss that would strike lessers deaf and blind. The Holy Light within him, an unstoppable storm of divine fury. Insurmountable for mere Objects. This he knew.
"Holy Council, my devotion to our creator is absolute. I have never strayed from the will of The Father, but a machine-"
"You dare imply the might of The Father could be shaken by mere objects?"
"Impossible." "Heresy." "Unspeakable." "Heresy." "Heresy."
"Silence."
"Your treachery will not be tolerated. As punishment, The Father's Light shall be severed from your body. You have 24 hours before the last of it's embers die out."
"And you with them." "Prove your loyalty." "Unmake your mistakes."
As the Light was ripped from his being, Gabriel's screams were silenced in the hiss of gospel in the praise of God. A boiling anguish to which even the fires of Hell could not compare. Through the blaze of torment a single burning hatred was forged anew.
Challenge
For the level's challenge, the player needs to lure Gabriel outside of the main platform of the arena, then deplete his first health bar while away from the platform, which causes him to drop into the pit below. Wall-jumping onto objects such as the large heart or keeping close to the walls of the platform can help stall in the air and wait for Gabriel to move towards you. Later weapons such as the Freezeframe Rocket Launcher or Whiplash can also help greatly: as the Freezeframe can be used to stay in the air for an extended amount of time by riding its rockets, and the Whiplash can be used to constantly hook onto Gabriel, however this can lead to taking damage from his attacks.
Trivia
- Hakita stated that the level is a reference to three different things:
- Two songs ("In The Flesh?" and "In The Flesh") from The Wall, an album by Pink Floyd.
- A level in the 1997 first-person-shooter Blood.
- The context of the level itself: you are both "inside the flesh" of Minos' corpse and finally meeting Gabriel "in the flesh".
