5-2: Waves of the Starless Sea is the second level of Wrath, set in the thunderous storm of the Ocean Styx. 5-2 introduces the Idol Idol and stars the Ferryman Ferryman as the main boss of the level. The music used for the leadup and boss-fight of 5-2 is "He is the Light in My Darkness" and has no music playing otherwise.

Level

Start

Upon entering the level, the player will start off on a stone bridge, next to a colossal stone pillar stretching into the sky. Around it lies the dark gloomy sea of the Ocean Styx, filled with millions of souls. Falling into the water will return the player to safe ground, and will deal damage until at 1 HP. Enemies that fall in will immediately get killed, granting the +CRUSHED style bonus to the player due to the souls crushing them.

In front of the entrance lies a set of broken up walkways and rock protrusions creating a path across the water. Moving across the first bridge will spawn a wave of 1 Schism Schism, 2 Drone Drones, and a Sentry Sentry.

The path forward will lead small stone island, where a Malicious Face Malicious Face, Stalker Stalker, and another Sentry will appear in front of the player.

Entrance Ramp

Connected to the rock is a square shaped set of platforms, which has a ramp leading up to a cabin. Moving towards the cabin will spawn in 3 Soldier Soldiers and a Virtue Virtue, with a Malicious Face appearing after the Virtue is killed.

Outside the main cabin.

Living Quarters

Inside the dimly lit cabin. Cozy.

Heading through into the cabin will lead into a small dim room with a fireplace and a staircase to a room above. Entering into the cabin will bring the first introduction to the Idol Idol: small, stationary Demons that bless an enemy with a protective shield, making it impervious to damage.

One Filth Filth will spawn in blessed by the Idol, requiring the player to head up the stairs to break the Idol in order to kill the Filth. Approaching the Idol will trigger a prompt on how to destroy it:

IDOLS can only be broken with MELEE

Breaking the Idol will cause it to shatter with a large explosion of blood, along with sending the player flying back with a shockwave. The Filth from earlier will no longer be invulnerable and can be easily killed.

Inside the room with the Idol, the player can find a desk with a book for the player to read, with a painting of a Ferryman Ferryman above:

TEXT SCANNED - LEGIBLE SCRIPT:

EXCERPT FROM FERRYMAN'S DIARY

Some calamity has struck the mortal world. What once The River Styx has now grown to an unfathomable ocean. A million weeping souls pouring in each day that the shores can barely contain. A tearful tide spilling over at each end, bow to stern, crying for mercy, begging for safe passage. But not all souls can pay and these old hands can only take so many coins.
Then one day, the current shifted. Wave after wave for minutes on end of millions, billions, as though the throat of the world was cut wide and the head wrenched back to speed the pour. I didn't have time to react. The weariness from my ceaseless work claimed me and I slipped beneath the roiling sea, into the depths of the Ocean Styx, my fate sealed by the crushing masses of endless bodies.

Suddenly, there was a light as brilliant as the Lord himself, ushering me from the darkness with mighty arms that held me with such compassion and warmth as I had never known:

"Be not afraid, sinner. Your devotion to God shows goodness in you; plentiful indeed. The heart is willing but the body must rest, lest you squander one of the Lord's creations."

His gentle words eased the pain and mended my wounds. My face wet with tears of relief, my words muffled by the weight of my duty. I could only lay in reverence, carried in the embrace of majesty.

Radiant is Gabriel, for he is the light in my darkness.

REMAINING TEXT: IRRELEVANT.

Moving forward through a dim hallway, the player enters a large room lined with bookshelves and candles, with a stone statue of Gabriel Gabriel at the far end of the room. 2 Idol Idols sit protected in large glass casings within the center.

Heading to the end of the room will cause an encounter of 1 Malicious Face Malicious Face, an idoled Streetcleaner Streetcleaner, and 4 Soldier Soldiers. Killing the remaining enemies will cause the glass case on the first Idol to open up and break it.

Killing the Streetcleaner will then cause an idoled Virtue Virtue to spawn in, along with causing 2 Cerberi Cerberi to awake. Killing the 2 Cerberi will then unlock the second Idol's case, before killing the Virtue to move forward.

Broken Pier

The wreckage of the pier, leading to the Skull Pedestals.

Heading through the door afterwards will lead to a room with a Blue Skull Key. Picking it up will open to the outside onto a wreck of wooden walkways, with a set of Red and Blue Pedestals across from the entrance. Moving forward will cause 4 Stray Strays and 2 Soldier Soldiers to spawn on the broken platforms.

Placing the blue skull onto the pedestal will cause the sea in front of the player to start shaking as a massive cruise ship starts rising out of the water, before emerging fully onto the surface. The player can then head either directly to the ship with methods such as Rocket Riding or explosive boosting, or alternatively find the Red Skull located in a building to the right of the main cabin.

Heading inside lies a small, empty room with a set of stairs leading up to the Red Skull sitting on a pedestal to the far end of the room. Walking up to it will cause it to lock with a glass panel, before an idoled Virtue Virtue spawns in. Approaching the Idol at the bottom floor will spawn 3 Streetcleaner Streetcleaners, and heading back to the Virtue will spawn 3 Soldier Soldiers and a Sentry Sentry.

Placing the Red Skull on the pedestal will cause a set of wooden platforms to rise out of the water next to the ship, allowing the player to jump up to make it on board.

All aboard!

The Ferry

Moving onto the ship, the player is directed to the bow of the ship to the left of the player.

Close-up shot of the Ferryman.

Heading to the bow lies the Ferryman Ferryman, sitting upon the railing above the exit gate. An Idol Idol lies within the middle of the deck., blessing the Ferryman. Breaking it will cause the Ferryman to drop down into the arena and lock the player out from escaping off of the ship before starting the boss fight.

The Ferryman Ferryman is a fast, agile and deadly foe, and can combo an inexperienced player very quickly. Their move set consists of combos with fast swings and cuts, each with their own cues and parry opportunities for the player to react accordingly to. If the player is aggressive, they will try and stay away. If the player backs off, they will try and move forward towards the player.

Once the first health bar is depleted, the Ferryman will jump up to the top of the ship, where they will continually summon bolts of lightning to smite the player. Making it up to the Ferryman will lead to another Idol to break, which starts the second phase in a smaller arena than before.

After defeating the Ferryman, the exit gate will open up back at the deck, and allow the player to finish the level.

Challenge

For this level's challenge, the player needs to use the Marksman Revolver Marksman Revolver to toss a coin to the Ferryman Ferryman without having broken its Idol. The Ferryman will catch the coin in its hand, and then will open the exit gate after a short animation. The player can break the Idol after giving the Ferryman the coin, undoing the challenge.

Secrets

Secret Orb Locations
#1 Soul Orb Soul Orb - Found by sliding across the water to the lighthouse far in the distance, at the back side of the building.
#2 Soul Orb Soul Orb - Underneath the planks connecting the Entrance Ramp to the cabin, a small crate can be found containing the orb.
#3 Soul Orb Soul Orb - Atop the roof of the cabin, between the two large rooms.
#4 Soul Orb Soul Orb - Found by falling through a gap on the roof of the left side of the cabin. Through the gap reveals a secret room with the orb and a boarded-up door.
#5 Blood Orb Blood Orb - Found by walking right towards the stern of the Ferryman's ship, on a walkway at the back.

Lighthouse

As well as containing the first Soul Orb Soul Orb, the player can find a set of 2 skeletons sitting upon the wall at the facing side of the lighthouse. Moving close to them will trigger a short message:

Hark! Neptune has struck them dead.
The two skeletons sitting by the lighthouse.

Jakito

A hidden secret can be found at the start of the level at the top of large stone tower. To make it there, the player is recommended to perform a Slam Storage, then by either Explosive Boosting, Ultraboosting, or Rocket Riding, the player can make it to a ledge to regain ground and make it up to the top of the tower. Reaching to it will lead to a cage holding a large plush-like figure. Approaching it will cause a message to appear:

I AM JAKITO. BRING ME A SACRIFICE. IT WILL GIVE ME THE
POWER TO ESCAPE.

In front of the cage lies a pedestal that the player can place an item onto. If the player brings an inadequate item, such as a Skull Key, it will say this:

NO. IT MUST BE INNOCENT FLESH.

The correct item can be found at the ship, requiring the Blue Skull to be collected first to make it appear. Then, by heading up into the large smokestacks, the player will find a small gray hamster, sitting on a straw nest. The name of the hamster is Florp, referencing an in-joke within the ULTRAKILL community. Bringing Florp up to the cage and placing it onto the pedestal will cause the cage to break apart, releasing Jakito:

THANK YOU. NOW I SHALL LAY WASTE TO THIS WORLD.

Jakito will then fade away from the original position within the cage. It will then appear behind the ferry in the distance, now gargantuan in size. A deafening harsh drone will play as everything then starts to shake and the screen slowly brightens. After the screen turns completely white, the game will close itself.

Completing the easter egg will then allow the player to spawn in Florp as a Sandbox unlockable, being able to spawn in the rodent with the Spawner Arm while cheats are enabled.

The wretched creature, trapped in the cage.
