The Gutterman is a Greater Machine introduced in 7-2: LIGHT UP THE NIGHT, and is the seventh Machine-class enemy that the player encounters in ULTRAKILL.
Guttermen are large, bulky machines with a primarily beige or rusty brown coloration, with a lighter beige color for their circular, dome-shaped helmets dotted with six black "eyespots". They have darker brown bellies made of a flexible, leathery material, and have rather stumpy, cone-shaped legs. They are armed with a large, rectangular riot shield in their left hand, while their right arm is replaced with a large, cylindrical five-barreled rotary cannon. Their shield, helmet, and belly also have slight blood-red accents. Additionally, the abbreviation "ЧТ-01"[1] is embossed on their right shoulder, which uses letters from the Cyrillic alphabet, and is short for "ЧЕЛОВЕК-ТАНК 01" (MAN-TANK 01).
Additionally, they wear a large coffin strapped onto their back which, after death, can be broken open with heavy damage to reveal the blood source powering them: a human skeleton.
Behaviour
The Gutterman begins to rev up their cannon before firing at the player. They continue to do so unless the player takes cover behind a wall or enemy, at which the Gutterman stops firing and slowly walks to where the player is hiding or a position in which the player is otherwise within sight. If the player gets too close to a Gutterman they briefly rear back and attempt to bash the player with their shield, which sends the player a short distance away.
The shield can be broken using a direct hit or shockwave from the Knuckleblaster, the primary fire of the
Impact Hammer, the punched corpse of a
Mindflayer, or a parried
Landmine. If the shield is broken, the Gutterman is stunned and unable to move or shoot for 3 seconds. They start to fire again shortly after. If close enough without their shield, they instead try to punch the player, which does less damage compared to a Gutterman with the shield and can be parried normally.
Once killed, the Gutterman grunts before falling onto the ground, creating a small shockwave and lifting up the player and any Light/Medium-weight enemies nearby. If an enemy is standing in front of the Gutterman as it is falling, they are crushed by the Gutterman's corpse, killing them instantly and awarding the + Pancaked style bonus.
Attacks
Rotary Cannon
The Gutterman revs up their rotary cannon before firing yellow hitscan shots at their target that can detonate explosive projectiles such as Core Grenades and
Rockets as well as deal 10 damage per hit.
The shots can be chargebacked, but the Gutterman spools down their cannon while a Coin is between them and their target.
While shooting, they slowly track their target, the rate of tracking increasing over time. Their tracking can be reset by breaking their shield, parrying their punch, or breaking line of sight.
Punch/Shield Bash
While their target is in close range, the Gutterman performs an unparriable shield bash, dealing 35 damage.
If their shield is broken, they punch their target instead, dealing 25 damage and also becoming parriable.
If the punch is parried, the Gutterman becomes stunned for a short amount of time.
Corpse Fall
When the Gutterman dies, they fall over, instantly killing any non-flying enemy that happens to be caught underneath them, giving the + Pancaked style bonus for each enemy killed. However, blessed enemies are unaffected.
Explosion
After the Gutterman has died, their corpse can be ground-slammed to create a red super explosion that deals 3.5 damage only to enemies. In The Cyber Grind, the explosion will occur once the Gutterman's corpse impacts the ground.
Strategy
The Knuckleblaster can be used to quickly destroy the Gutterman's shield, which removes the damage resistance and resets the tracking on their cannon.
Breaking line of sight is another way to reset the tracking of the Gutterman, though it is not always an option, it can work when the player's health is not high enough to rush in for a direct Knuckleblaster punch.
In chaotic situations or encounters where it is difficult to obtain a direct hit, it can be a viable option to break the Gutterman's shield using the Knuckleblaster's shockwave, due to its large radius of effect, and can restore the player's lost health and stamina in a pinch.
The Gutterman's cannon is a considerable danger at range, but once a Gutterman's shield is broken, defeating one is trivial. Repeated Shotgun parrying is an effective way to dispatch one due to the fact that they only punch when in close range.
Difficulty Changes
Brutal
- Enrages for 10 seconds when their shield is broken or when parried.
- Becomes unparriable while enraged.

Trivia
- Guttermen are presumed to have been made in Russia, as evidenced by the Cyrillic phrasing on their right shoulders.
- The phrasing would roughly translate to “Tank man V1”.
- Guttermen are one of the few enemies which do not ragdoll, explode, or gib when killed, instead falling over and becoming a destructible obstacle.
- In the Cyber Grind, Guttermen do not trigger a shockwave on death and explode instantly upon dropping on the ground.
- This also occurs if one is killed while in clash mode.
- When dead, the coffin on the back of Guttermen can be broken open.
- Guttermen, Malicious Faces, V2, the Flesh Prison's eyeballs, Big Johninator and Sentries are currently the only enemies in the game to use hitscan attacks.
- Cannon-Ricocheted Coins can sometimes backfire and hit V1 instead. These backfired coins deal the same damage as the cannon itself.
- Guttermen take fall damage, but this can only be exploited by catapulting them with nails or flinging them with the Spawner Arm.
- The Gutterman's death sound effect was taken from the intro of 1992 anime 'Giant Robo The Animation'.
- The Gutterman enemy design was inspired by the infamous Heavy Weapon Dude from DOOM II: Hell on Earth[2].
- The Gutterman in the tram station ambush after obtaining the Payload in 7-2 does not possess its coffin, implying that it was the one who wrote the secret book found in the building where the
Impact Hammer is located.
