Guttermen are the eighth Machine-class enemy that players fight, and are first encountered as a miniboss in 7-2.
They are large robots standing on stumpy legs, wielding a shield and minigun in their left and right hands respectively.
Additionally, they wear a large coffin on their back which, after death, can be broken open with heavy damage to reveal the blood source powering them.

Behaviour

The Gutterman will start revving up their minigun and start firing at the player. They will continue to do so unless the player either takes cover behind a wall. In which case the Gutterman will walk to where the player is hiding. If the player gets to close to a gutterman it will try bashing them with their shield, which will send the player a short distance away.
The shield can be broken using a direct hit or shockwave from the Knuckleblaster Knuckleblaster, the primary fire of the Impact Hammer Impact Hammer, the punched corpse of a Mindflayer Mindflayer, or a parried Landmine Landmine. If the shield is broken, the Gutterman will be stunned and unable to move or shoot for 3 seconds. They will start to fire again shortly after. If close enough without its shield, it will instead try to punch the player, which will do less damage compared to a Gutterman with the shield.

Once killed it will grunt and fall onto the ground creating a small shockwave lifting up the player and light/medium weight enemies close by.

Attacks

Minigun
The Gutterman will rev up its minigun, firing hitscan shots at its target that can explode grenade-type projectiles as well as deal 10 damage per hit.
The shots can be chargebacked, but the Gutterman will spool down their minigun while a coin is between it and its target.
While shooting, they slowly track their target, the rate of tracking increasing overtime. Their tracking can be reset by breaking their shield, parrying their punch, or breaking line of sight.

Punch/Shield Bash
While its target is in close range, the Gutterman will bash it with their shield, dealing 35 damage.
If their shield is broken, they will punch their target instead, dealing 25 damage and also becoming parriable.
If the punch is parried, the Gutterman will become stunned for a short amount of time.

Corpse Fall
When the Gutterman has died, it will fall over, instantly killing any non-flying enemy that happens to be caught underneath it, giving the + PANCAKED style bonus.

Explosion
After the Gutterman has died, its corpse can be slammed to create a super explosion that deals 3.5 damage only to enemies.
In The Cyber Grind, the explosion will occur once the Gutterman's corpse impacts the ground.

Strategy

The Knuckleblaster can be used to destroy the Gutterman's shields, which removes the damage resistance and resets the tracking on their minigun.

Breaking line of sight is another way to reset the tracking of the Gutterman, though it isn't always an option, it can work when your HP isn't high enough to rush in for a direct Knuckleblaster punch.

Difficulty Changes

Brutal

  • Enrages for 10 seconds when its shield is broken or when parried.
    • Becomes unparriable while enraged.

Terminal Entry

TYPE: GREATER MACHINE

DATA:
Built in the early days of the Final War, the Guttermen were one of the first successful experiments in using blood as a fuel source, as well as the first automatons to be deployed in wide-scale conflict.

During the war's first phase, an era of trench warfare, these seemingly unstoppable walls were airdropped into enemy trenches, which they would then slowly and systematically clear out as all opposing soldiers would have to choose between being minced by the Gutterman, or running out of the trench and getting mowed down by machine gun fire.

Researchers had not yet found a way to keep the blood inside a machine fresh, so a live fuel source was strapped inside, kept alive by minimal life support, before the Guttermen were welded shut. Although publically these fuel sources were claimed to be volunteer patriots, most were deserters, battle-fatigued returnees or prisoners of war.

Forces from far beyond took notice of the cruelty man was capable of, and the suffering of these human blood supplies served as an inspiration for the creation of the Mannequins.

STRATEGY:
- The shield is a Gutterman's main defense. Destroying it with the Knuckleblaster will cause them to take increased damage.

- Although slow at first, their tracking will improve the longer they maintain line of sight. It's best not to stay out in the open for too long.

- Once the shield has been broken, the Gutterman's punches can be parried, which resets their tracking.

- A Gutterman's corpse can be ground slammed to cause a large explosion that damages surrounding enemies and launches the attacker high in the air.

Trivia

  • The Guttermen were teased in a rather unusual way when compared to other enemies.
    • They were first witnessed in the last few frames of the 7-2 teaser, where their shields and arm cannons could be seen coming out of the fallen payload shells.
    • Many people believed the Gutterman was on treads during their first teaser because it didn't have any animations at that time.[1]
  • Guttermen are one of the few enemies which do not ragdoll, explode or gib when killed, instead falling over and making a loud thud.
  • It is assumed the Guttermen were made in Russia, as the abbreviation on their right shoulder "ЧТ-01"[2] uses letters from the Cyrillic alphabet, and is short for "ЧЕЛОВЕК-ТАНК 01" (MAN-TANK 01)
  • In the Cyber Grind, Guttermen will not trigger a shockwave on death and explode instantly, creating a red explosion that is excellent for clearing the wave in addition to crushing any enemy they fall on.
    • This also occurs if killed while in clash mode.
  • Its enemy design may be inspired by the infamous Heavy Weapon Dude from DOOM II: Hell on Earth.
  • When killed, the coffin on the back of the Gutterman can be broken open with any weapon that can break open the [INSUFFICIENT POWER] blockade.
  • Guttermen, Malicious Faces, V2, the Flesh Prison's eyeballs, Big Johninator and Sentries are currently the only enemies in the game to use hitscan attacks.
  • As seen in the release showcase, the Gutterman did not originally have a specific Style bonus when breaking the shield, instead giving the player the [+PARRY] bonus.
    • This caused confusion among the community, due to it seemingly breaking every preset rule.
  • During the Halloween, Christmas and Easter Seasonal Events, both the Gutterman and the corpse inside its coffin can be found wearing the Seasonal hats.
  • Guttermen display various unique behaviors not typically seen in normal play.
    • Guttermen will stop firing after a long period of constant fire. After a brief cooldown, they continue firing as normal.
    • Minigun-Ricocheted Coins can sometimes backfire and hit V1 instead. These backfired coins will deal the same damage as the minigun.
    • Guttermen take fall damage, but this can only be exploited by catapulting them with nails or flinging them with the Spawner Arm.
    • Trying to get another parry out of a Gutterman by standing too close to it after parrying its fist attack will make it keep firing until it reaches full accuracy, which it will then attempt its fist attack again.
  • The Gutterman's death sfx was taken from the intro of 1992 anime 'Giant Robo The Animation'
  • The Gutterman's concept was based off Iron Lung; an 2022 indie horror game where the player is welded shut within a small submarine.
  • The gutterman in the ambush after you get the bomb in 7-2 has its coffin torn off, implying that it was the one who wrote the secret book in the alt weapon section.
