Held Objects
See also: Skull Keys, Florp
ULTRAKILL features a variety of items which can be picked up and held by V1 when punched using any arm, including the Whiplash's hook. Listed below are minor held objects which can be found throughout the game. Most of these objects can be thrown to the ground after being picked up via punching in any direction, unless stated otherwise. Held objects can also be placed on altars, which will lock them in place until picked up again by the player.
Book
Books are featured throughout several levels in the game, starting with 1-4: Clair de Lune. These can often be found on tables or lecterns in non-combat rooms. When held, a menu will appear describing the text found in the book. The equipped weapon will also be holstered and cannot be fired, but the player is still able to move. Typical books feature red covers and plain designs, though tablets similar in functionality appear in 4-3: A Shot in the Dark and 7-1: Garden of Forking Paths as part of the secret encounters. 5-S: I Only Say Morning and 7-S: Hell Bath No Fury also contain messages in bottles that need to be broken to be read. 7-4: ...Like Antennas to Heaven features a hidden book with blank pages.
When a player picks up a book for the first time in a level, it will show a short HUD animation reading "TEXT SCANNING..." with a loading bar which, when completed, will display a large panel of text over the player's screen. If the player picks up the book later, the animation will be skipped unless the level was restarted.
The content of books varies greatly between instances, generally containing text regarding lore for the area or its characters.
For a compilation of all of the books found in the Developer Museum, see the page of said level.
Book | Entry |
1-4: Clair de Lune | TEXT SCANNED - UNIQUE PASSAGE: ". . . My mind is adrift with the eternal torments. Lurid vistas painted in insidious tones, hollow walls that scream to the touch. A mocking song plays at all hours, even the sounds of birds are fake. All reminders of my enduring damnation. |
2-2: Death at 20,000 Volts | TEXT SCANNED - LEGIBLE SCRIPT: "...Gabriel struck down Minos, his flesh torn asunder with torrents of crimson pooling at his feet as we all cried out for clarity. 'Justice,' Gabriel decreed to all, with our just ruler writhing in wailing agony, 'The Lord's Will be done.' We watched on in horror as Minos lay broken, now waning, screaming in defiance of God's Will, Gabriel." |
4-2: God Damn the Sun | TEXT SCANNED - UNIQUE PASSAGE: "It has been days since we last saw any angels. Without their oppression, there is no need for us to carry on our punishment. Even the meekest of the damned have abandoned their penance to take up arms. All can see how they have robbed us of our minds, bodies, and souls, leaving us only the hopes of a salvation that will never come, but no longer. If only we knew the suffering that would befall us next..." REMAINING TEXT: IRRELEVANT. |
4-3: A Shot in the Dark (Secret slab) | Within the PYRAMID lies the chamber of THE FELINE and THE RODENT. Within the CHAMBER lies a pool of clear WATER. |
5-2: Waves of the Starless Sea | TEXT SCANNED - LEGIBLE SCRIPT: EXCERPT FROM FERRYMAN'S DIARY |
5-S: I Only Say Morning (Well entry) | DAY 529: STILL SEARCHING |
5-S: I Only Say Morning (Bottled message) | If you can read this, please help. I've been stranded on an island off the shore for weeks now, and I'm running out of supplies. I was drawn to ride the waves in hopes of finding the legendary size 2 fish. I had combed every inch of land and lake with no avail. |
6-1: Cry for the Weeper (Armboy's book) | A R M |
7-1: Garden of Forking Paths | MOST TEXT: INCOMPREHENSIBLE. DISPLAYING FINAL PAGE: |
7-1: Garden of Forking Paths (Secret slab) | Dead end after dead end. Is there really no way out? Get lost in the labyrinth, die in the battlefield, or get lost in the forest... |
7-2: Light Up the Night (Tram Station) | Something has happened. It has been days since our reconaissance has seen a single angel. We know not the cause, but we recognize the chance. We have hid underground from the chaos up above for far too long. Without the watchful eyes of the angels, we will brave the labyrinth and find a way out of this place. If you are one who seeks shelter, take heed: The archive is trapped. A single misstep and reprogrammed protectors will activate. Write these instructions down and follow them carefully if you wish to take refuge on the other side: |
7-2: Light Up the Night (![]() |
Mother, mother... Mother of me, I know I know I should not miss you so, but mother of me, I do. Your pained breaths that rasp'd and reverberated in your rusted iron tomb... The blood of your breast that nourish'd me and warmed me in its caress, when corpse and cruelty were all I witnessed... |
7-S: Hell Bath No Fury (Bottled message) | SORRY, GONE FISHIN'! -SIZE 2 |
7-4: ...Like Antennas to Heaven | THIS IS THE ONLY WAY IT COULD HAVE ENDED. WAR NO LONGER NEEDED ITS ULTIMATE PRACTICIONER. IT HAD BECOME A SELF-SUSTAINING SYSTEM. MAN WAS CRUSHED UNDER THE WHEELS OF A MACHINE CREATED TO CREATE THE MACHINE CREATED TO CRUSH THE MACHINE. SAMSARA OF CUT SINEW AND CRUSHED BONE. DEATH WITHOUT LIFE. NULL OUROBOROS. ALL THAT REMAINED IS WAR WITHOUT REASON. |
Torch
A torch is given to the player in P-1: Soul Survivor and 4-3: A Shot in the Dark to aid in navigation through dark areas and activate salt altars. Torches behave similarly to Skull Keys, igniting enemies and Gasoline on contact and can only be placed on altars. Unlike Skull Keys, Torches emit a consistent amount of light and do not require punching to increase their brightness temporarily. They are also held outside of the player's sight and only appear when the left arm is used. Using the
Whiplash with a Torch held will light the area around the hook, aiding in visibility and navigation.
4-2: God Damn the Sun features a moon torch which is used to open the secret entrance to 4-S: Clash of the Brandicoot. It generates a white light and can still ignite enemies and gasoline.
Soap
A hidden soap bar can be found in 1-3: Halls of Sacred Remains (in the ceiling of a hallway in the blue path) and 4-3: A Shot in the Dark (in the final arena). The soap bar instantly kills any enemy on contact, which can be done by either throwing it via punching or using the Whiplash. While it makes the levels they're found in much easier to complete, it does not give style. This item originates from the New Blood game DUSK, where it shares the same functionality.
Crystal of Madness
A Sandbox exclusive item which causes enemies caught in its mist to in-fight when broken. This object can only be broken when thrown and does not break from any other damage sources. This item also originates from DUSK, where it shares the same functionality. Infighting enemies have a unique status effect indicated by green mist around their heads and do not target enemies of the same type.
Miscellaneous
- The fish and bait in 5-S: I Only Say Morning are objects which can be held, with their mechanics detailed in the level's respective page.
- A large variety of plushies representing the developers and contributors of ULTRAKILL, as well as V1, can be found in the Developer Museum.
